Stress & Burnout

Have you been asking any of these questions lately.....

1. Why am I so tired all the time?

2. Why can’t I switch off?

3. Am I burnt out or just stressed?

4. Why do I feel overwhelmed by everything?

5. Why do I feel guilty when I rest?

When "I'm fine" has become your default answer...

"How are you?"

"I'm fine."

It's amazing how often those two words come out automatically.

Sometimes they're true.

Sometimes they're simply easier than saying, "Actually, I'm exhausted, overwhelmed, holding everything together with coffee, determination and the vague hope that next week will somehow be easier."

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.

Stress and burnout have a sneaky way of creeping into our lives. They rarely arrive all at once. More often, they build quietly over weeks, months or even years until one day you realise you're running on empty.

Whether you're looking for stress and burnout therapy on the Wirral or online therapy across the UK, you've already taken an important first step simply by being here.

What do stress and burnout actually feel like?

We all experience stress from time to time.

Stress itself isn't the problem. In fact, it can sometimes help us focus, solve problems or meet challenges.

Burnout is different.

Burnout happens when your emotional, mental and physical resources have been depleted for so long that your body and mind begin saying,

"I can't keep doing this."

You might recognise yourself if you:

  • Wake up feeling tired before the day has even begun.

  • Feel constantly overwhelmed, even by small tasks.

  • Find yourself snapping at the people you love.

  • Feel emotionally numb or disconnected.

  • Can't seem to switch your mind off.

  • Struggle to concentrate.

  • Feel guilty whenever you rest.

  • Have lost interest in things you used to enjoy.

  • Feel as though you're constantly behind, no matter how hard you work.

  • Wonder why everyone else seems to cope better than you.

Here's a little secret...

They probably don't.

Many people become incredibly good at looking like they're coping while quietly falling apart inside.

---

Why does burnout happen?

Burnout isn't a sign that you're weak

More often, it's a sign you've been strong for far too long.

Perhaps you've been caring for everyone else.

- Working long hours.

- Juggling family responsibilities.

- Trying to be the dependable one.

Always saying yes.

Always putting yourself last.

Eventually your nervous system starts asking for something you've probably been denying yourself for a long time:

Rest.

Understanding.

Permission to stop carrying everything alone.

How can therapy help?

Many people come to therapy believing they simply need to become "better at coping."

I don't think that's always the answer.

Sometimes the real question is...

"Why have I been expected to cope with so much?"

Together we'll explore not only what's making life feel overwhelming now, but also the patterns that may have developed over many years.

We'll look at things like:

  • Perfectionism.

  • People-pleasing.

  • Difficulty saying no.

  • High expectations of yourself.

  • Feeling responsible for everyone else.

  • Ignoring your own needs.

  • The belief that resting is somehow lazy or selfish.

Therapy isn't about teaching you to squeeze even more into an already full life.

It's about helping you create a life that no longer requires you to constantly recover from it.

My approach to stress and burnout therapy

I'm an integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor, which means I tailor therapy to you rather than expecting you to fit a particular model.

We'll work together to understand what has brought you to this point and what needs to change—not just practically, but emotionally too.

  • Sometimes burnout is about work.

  • Sometimes it's about relationships.

  • Sometimes it's years of carrying invisible emotional loads that nobody else has noticed.

Often it's a mixture of all three.

My role isn't to judge how you've got here.

It's to help you find a way forward that feels kinder, healthier and more sustainable.

Therapy sessions

I offer:

  • Face-to-face therapy on the Wirral

  • Online therapy throughout the UK

Whether we meet in person or online, the aim is the same—to create a calm, supportive space where you don't have to hold everything together for an hour.

Sometimes that's more restorative than people expect.

Questions people often ask

  • How do I know if I'm burnt out or just stressed?

Stress usually improves once the pressure reduces.

Burnout often doesn't.

If you've rested but still feel emotionally exhausted, detached or unable to recover, it may be time to explore what's really going on.

  • Is burnout just about work?

Not at all.

Burnout can come from parenting, caring responsibilities, relationships, long-term stress, chronic illness or simply spending years putting everyone else's needs before your own.

  • Why do I feel guilty when I rest?

Many people have learnt that their value comes from being productive, helpful or needed.

Therapy can help you understand where those beliefs came from and begin developing a healthier relationship with rest.

  • Will therapy help me cope better?

Perhaps.

But more importantly, therapy may help you stop believing you have to cope with everything on your own.
