Depression

People rarely ask -  “Do I have depression?”

Instead have you find yourself asking any of these questions…

1. Why don’t I enjoy anything anymore?

2. Why don’t I feel like myself anymore?

3. Why does everything feel so hard?

4. Why can’t I find the motivation to do anything?

5. Why do I feel numb?

When getting through the day feels harder than it used to...

People often imagine depression as feeling sad all the time.

Sometimes it is sadness.

Sometimes it isn't.

Sometimes depression feels like...

Nothing.

No motivation.

No energy.

No enjoyment.

No enthusiasm for the things you once loved.

It can feel like you're watching life happen around you while wondering why everyone else seems to find it so much easier.

If you've found yourself saying,

  • "I'm just tired."

  • "I can't be bothered."

  • "I don't feel like myself anymore."

...you're certainly not alone.

Whether you're looking for depression therapy on the Wirral or online depression therapy across the UK, you've already taken a courageous first step simply by being here.

What does depression actually feel like?

Depression affects everyone differently.

For some people it feels like overwhelming sadness.

For others it's numbness.

A loss of interest.

Feeling disconnected from yourself or the people you love.

Many people tell me they:

  • Feel exhausted, no matter how much they sleep.

  • Find it difficult to get motivated.

  • Have stopped enjoying things they once loved.

  • Feel hopeless about the future.

  • Struggle to concentrate.

  • Withdraw from family and friends.

  • Feel guilty for not coping better.

  • Criticise themselves constantly.

  • Feel as though they're letting everyone down.

  • Wonder if they'll ever feel like themselves again.

Sometimes people also tell me,

"Nothing terrible has happened. I don't understand why I feel like this."

The truth is, depression doesn't always need one obvious cause.

And you don't need to justify your feelings in order to deserve support.

Why do people experience depression?

There isn't one single reason.

Depression can develop for many different reasons and is often influenced by a combination of life experiences, relationships, stress, loss, physical health, overwhelming responsibilities or long periods of simply carrying too much.

Sometimes it follows a significant life event.

Sometimes it seems to arrive quietly.

Whatever the reason, depression isn't a sign of weakness, laziness or failure.

It's certainly not something you can simply "snap out of."

If it were, you probably would have done so already.

How can therapy help?

One of the hardest things about depression is how isolating it can feel.

Depression often tells us we're alone.

That nobody understands.

That nothing will change.

Therapy offers something different.

A place where you don't have to pretend you're okay.

Together we'll gently explore what's been happening in your life, how you're feeling, and what might be contributing to your experience.

There won't be pressure to "look on the bright side."

And I won't expect you to have all the answers.

Instead, we'll work at a pace that feels manageable, helping you make sense of your experiences while finding small, meaningful ways to reconnect with yourself and the life you want to live.

Many people begin to notice they:

  • Feel less alone.

  • Understand themselves more compassionately.

  • Reconnect with hope.

  • Feel more emotionally connected.

  • Develop healthier ways of coping.

  • Feel more able to enjoy life again.

Progress isn't usually about suddenly feeling happy.

It's often about gradually feeling more like yourself.

My approach to depression therapy

I'm an integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor, which means I tailor therapy to you rather than following one fixed approach.

Depression isn't the same for everyone.

So therapy shouldn't be either.

Together we'll explore your experiences with curiosity rather than judgement, helping you understand not only what you're feeling but also why.

We'll consider your relationships, life experiences, current pressures and emotional wellbeing, always moving at a pace that feels right for you.

Above all, therapy offers a place where you don't have to carry everything on your own anymore.

Whether we meet in person or online, my aim is to create a calm, welcoming space where you can simply arrive as you are.

Questions people often ask

  • Will therapy make my depression disappear?

Therapy isn't a quick fix.

What it can do is help you understand your experiences, develop healthier ways of coping and gradually reconnect with yourself.

Many people find that things begin to feel lighter over time, even if change happens one small step at a time.

  • What if I don't feel like talking?

That's okay.

Some sessions may feel easier than others.

There is no expectation to arrive with a list of things to say.

We'll work together, wherever you happen to be that day.

  • What if I've felt like this for a long time?

Many people live with depression for months or even years before reaching out.

It's never "too late" to ask for support.

  • What if I'm taking medication?

Therapy and medication can work well alongside one another.

If you're taking medication prescribed by your GP or another healthcare professional, therapy can provide a space to explore your emotional experiences while continuing any medical support you're receiving.

Ready when you are

Depression has a way of convincing us that nothing will ever change.

That reaching out won't make a difference.

That we're somehow beyond help.

I've never found those thoughts to be the truth.

Sometimes the hardest part isn't therapy.

It's taking the first step towards it.

If you're wondering whether therapy could help, you're welcome to book a free initial consultation.

We can have a relaxed conversation, answer any questions you may have, and see whether working together feels like the right fit.

And if today isn't the day, that's okay too.

The Best Self Therapy Learning Library will still be here whenever you're ready.

Because even when life feels heavy, you don't have to carry it alone.
